Winding Trails, Inc. (formerly the Recreation Association of Farmington) was established in 1947 by returning war veterans who saw the need for a summer day camp in the community. For eight seasons the camp was run on 20 acres of land originally owned by Avon Old Farms School. In 1955, the school sold three hundred acres of land to Winding Trails, Inc. and the permanent site of Winding Trails Summer Day Camp and Winding Trails Recreation Facility were established. Since this time, the facility has grown to add Dunning Lake (an additional 100 acres) and the recent purchase of six additional acres just north of the main office building. Since 1995, the construction of the 4 tennis courts, 11 acre sportsplex including the soccer field, softball field, 3 sand volleyball courts, 3 basketball courts, boccie courts, and playscape have improved the facilities for the camp and membership. In 1999, the Lodge and camp cooler were added. For 2000, the bathhouse at Dunning Lake was renovated.
The summer camp, cross country skiing, and rentals of the facility are open to the public. Certain other special programs are open to the general public, however, any other use of the park is limited to Winding Trails members who pay a yearly fee to use the park.
