INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Winding Trails Recreation Association, a Farmington, Connecticut based non profit organization is seeking a motivated and team-oriented individual to internship with our organization. Winding Trails, Inc. provides year round recreational and educational activities for the enjoyment of families and individuals of all ages. This internship opportunity provides learning opportunities through our ACA accredited summer day camp, 100-acre beach waterfront, and membership programs. This internship is scheduled to run for approximately 8-12 weeks from mid-June to mid-August. The exact length of the internship will depend on the candidate selected and their personal time commitments. A salary is included with this internship. Housing, however, is not available. The closing date to apply is January 31, 2007.
The internship experience may include, but is not limited to:
- Planning, scheduling, and organizing activities associated with our various camp and membership programs, special events, and recreation programs.
- Possible donation acquisition.
- Maintaining reports, records, and evaluations on programs.
- Promoting programs through a variety of means including newsletters, flyers, newspapers, and the Internet.
The successful candidate would preferably meet the following qualifications:
- Currently enrolled as a sophmore, junior, or senior at an accredited college/university with a recreation program.
- Majoring in recreation or a related field.
- Has some prior experience working in a recreational setting, planning of special events and/or knowledge of various recreation programs.
- Has strong organizational skills, public relations skills, knows a variety of computer applications, and can work independently or in a team setting.
A salary will be included with the position. Background checks will be conducted on all finalists for this position. Closing date for applying is January 31, 2007. Interviews will be conducted in mid-February.

Waterfront Director
Basic Function: The Waterfront Director oversees the staffing and activities of Dunning Lake. He/She creates a tone and atmosphere that provides a safe, clean, and fun place for Winding Trails Members and their guests.
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Must have a current Red Cross Lifeguarding Certificate and American Red Cross CPR-FPR
- Must have 3 years experience.
Experience:
- Familiar with aquatics operations is a must.
- Previous experience in staff management.
Specific Responsibilities:
Knowledge: Knowledge of principles and practices of beach rules, policies and procedures.
Primary Duties:
- Direct staff training
- Oversee in-service training
- Set up schedules and oversee daily paperwork

Assistant Waterfront Director
Basic Function: To provide leadership and direction to the lifeguards and patrons as well as assume control in the absence of Waterfront Director.
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 20 years of age.
- Must have a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding and CPR-FPR certification
- Must have at least 3 years experience
- Must be willing to obtain higher levels of training
Experience:
- Prior lifeguarding and/or supervisory management
- Experience Previous experience in aquatics operations is desirable
Characteristics: An Assistant Waterfront Director needs to have the same characteristics as a lifeguard, such as reliability, a positive attitude, courtesy and consistency. In addition he/she must possess the ability to lead, command respect and motivate others. Problem- solving and decision-making skills, self-confidence and initiative, and interpersonal and "people management" skills are also needed attributes.
Specific Responsibilities:
Knowledge: Knowledge of principles and practices of the Waterfront facility and abide by the policies and procedures designated for Winding Trails.
Primary Duties:
- Ensuring the safety of both the lifeguard team and facility patrons
- Prevent injury and minimize or eliminate hazardous situations
- Educate patrons about facility rules and regulations
- Develop and implement the emergency action plan
- Respond quickly to all emergency situations and personally handle problem situations
- Provide sufficient coverage at all times
- Supervising and training lifeguard staff
- Plan and provide job-related training
- Communicate and interact with all staff
- Serve as a liaison between the Waterfront Director, Executive Director and lifeguard staff
Secondary Duties:
- Supervising the safety, general care and cleaning of the Facility periodically walk through the picnic table areas and bathhouse

Lesson Coordinator
Basic Function: To provide leadership and direction to the Water Safety Instructors and address patron concerns regarding swimming lessons at Winding Trails.
Qualifications:
- Must have a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding and CPR-FPR certification.
- Must have a current Water Safety Instructor certification
- Must have at least 2 years of experience teaching swimming
- Must have interpersonal skills, organization and the ability to train and evaluate lesson instructors
Specific Responsibilities:
Knowledge: Knowledge of the organization of Winding Trails swimming lesson program as well as the knowledge to distinguish if an instructor has the skills and enthusiasm to conduct a progressive class.
Primary Duties:
- Orient old and new WSI to Winding Trails swimming lesson program
- Consult with parents on the progress of their children
- Address all questions and comments to help accommodate each student’s needs
- Provide additional training to all WSI to better Winding Trails program
- Evaluate teaching- Guest teach with each instructor
- Provide safe effective equipment
Secondary Duties:
- Organize instructor assignments and structure classes according to level and size
- Conduct patron evaluations

Boat Attendant
Basic Function:
Provide a safe atmosphere for boat rental patrons
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Must have current American Red Cross Lifeguard and CPR-FPR certificate
- Must have knowledge and strength to maneuver all boats
Specific Responsibilities:
Primary Duties:
- React quickly and accurately to all emergency situations
- Educate patrons about boating safety
- Question the swimming ability of a patron when needed and enforce the life-jacket rule
- Warn boat rentals about boating boundaries
- Rescue all stranded boats
- Collect and secure boat rental money
- Lock and unlock boats daily
Secondary Duties:
- Keep boats clean and functional
- Keep lower boathouse neat and organized
- Report any maintenance problems to Waterfront Director or Assistant Waterfront Director

Senior Lifeguard

- Previous experience in some phase of aquatics operations is desirable.
- A lifeguard must have considerable ability as a swimmer plus skill in rescue work, resuscitations, and first aide.
Specific Responsibilities:
Knowledge: Knowledge of principles and practices of facility rules, policies and practices.
Primary Duties:
- Observe and enforce all rules and regulations

- Must have passed all American Red Cross levels of swim progression
Experience:
- Must have previous experience in aquatics and working with children
Specific Responsibilities:
Primary Duties:
- React quickly and accurately to all emergency situations
- Oversee health, well-being, and safety of all participants
- Oversee discipline of group so that all can get maximum benefit
- Plan and present aquatic skill in a logical progression in order to build a good foundation
- Complete all required records and swim cards on time
Secondary Duties:
- Set up class equipment and area
- Motivate students to learn

Camp Coordinator
Minimum Qualifications:
- Previous camp staff experience.

- Ability and experience in supervising staff and campers.

- At least 21 years of age.
Job Description: Under the direction of the Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director, the Camp Coordinator is responsible for daily contact, support and guidance of the specified camp section. ( i.e. lower, middle, upper, or program).
Typical Responsibilities and Duties:
- Uphold all policies and philosophies of Winding Trails.
- During staff training, help train staff in your section of camp as to their responsibilities and duties.
- Work with staff and campers to foster a healthy team oriented camp experience.
- Supervise all units and staff in your section of camp and ensure all units are following their respective schedules.
- Daily communication with all counselors on an individual basis to address any issue.
- Correct or reprimand staff as soon as possible (in private), for actions that put the health and safety of the campers at risk.
- Be sure that camp units are covered in the event staff are absence. If need be, fill in for staff as necessary.
- Formally evaluate staff at least twice a season, conducting other evaluations as necessary.
- Work with other camp coordinators and committees on organizing and implementing all special events.
- Assist those campers and staff who may need help fitting into the camp atmosphere.
- Attend all Parent’s nights and meetings as assigned.
- Participate in all campwide special events including "dress up" days and ending session special events.
- Evaluate current season and make suggestions for following season.
- Make recommendations on hiring, promotion, and termination of staff.

- Supervise and train all unit staff including Assistant Unit Director, Junior Counselor, and Counselors - In - Training to their specific responsibilities.
- Assist all program staff in carrying out activities planned in their specific area and supervising your campers.
- Correct or reprimand unit staff as soon as possible (in private), for actions that put the health and safety of the campers at risk.
- Be responsible for the welfare of each individual in the unit and do all possible to solve problems.
- Assist those campers and staff who may need help fitting into the camp atmosphere.
- On a session basis, be sure all campers’ parents have been called and informed as to the status of their child in Winding Trails camp.
- Formally evaluate staff at least twice a season, conducting other evaluations as necessary.
- Attend all Parent’s nights and meetings as assigned.
- In the event a program specialist is absent, lead that activity area for your unit.
- Under the direction of the Waterfront Director, get in the water daily and teach swim lessons to your campers.

Ability to communicate and work with groups and provide necessary instruction to campers.
