WINDING TRAILS SUMMER DAY CAMP SEASON

2008 SEASON

Camp operates Monday-Friday from 9:00am to 3:30pm (extended hours available) starting on June 23 until August 15. The camp season is consists of the following four sessions:

SESSION I June 23rd – July 4th

Summertime is here and Winding Trails is the place to be for the hottest summer fun! Join us as we kick-off another great summer in-style with a session loaded up to the brim with amazing activities, a great performer, the premier of a new series of morning game shows and a rocking summer BBQ on the fourth of July.

SESSION II July 7th – July 18th

Don’t forget your bathing suit because this session is going to leave you soaked! Water runs rapid these two weeks with uniquely themed water attractions and events. There are lots of exciting new activities to enjoy plus many of our traditional favorites come back like our Water Carnival making its soaking return

SESSION III July 21st – August 1st

The Trails come alive once again with the excitement of our annual Wizard Tournaments. Campers participate in unit and camp-wide tournaments and challenges earning points for their team. Ultimately, only one will be crowned the champion and will get the bragging rights for another year until the tournaments convene again. Get ready to cast your spell.

SESSION IV August 4th – August 15th

Don’t look so glum, school’s not back in session yet! Join us for our final session of the summer as we say goodbye with a bang. There is going to be so much going on this session you won’t know where to begin. Like our annual camp-wide talent show, or our annual Lollipop Fair, don’t miss a great performer, bounce house day, and our farewell ice cream social. Saying goodbye to summer has never been this much fun.

ABOUT THE SESSIONS

We would like to remind you that all of our weeks follow the same basic schedule that includes swimming, sports, and specialty areas such as arts and crafts, music and drama, nature, boating and more. We reserve the right to make schedule/event changes at anytime during a session.

Early Drop-Off and Late Pick-up

For your convenience, arrangements can be made to drop your child off early and/or pick-up your child later.

Early ProgramDrop-off starts at 7:30am. This great program offers supervised play on our Sportsplex along with many other programmed activities.

Late ProgramPick-up from this afternoon program can be anywhere from 3:30pm until 5:30pm. This program will head to the camp waterfront for an additional supervised free swim period. Basketball, volleyball, four-square and field games are also available. A light snack with milk or juice is served.

Activities in both programs are subject to change depending on the weather and the group’s desires. An additional fee of $45.00 per child per session will be charged for the morning or afternoon program. Sign up with your registration.

AGE GROUPS

Approximate Staff to Camper ratio is 1 to 6.

Scouts Preschool ages 3 & 4
(Half Day Program, am or pm)
Cherokee Entering Kindergarten
(Full Day or Half Day Program available)
Hiawatha Entering First Grade
Ranger Entering Second Grade
Tamarack Entering Third Grade
Mohawk Entering Fourth Grade
Apache Entering Fifth Grade
Pioneer Entering Sixth Grade
Robin Hood Entering Seventh Grade
Navajo Entering Eighth Grade

Winding Trails Summer Day Camp consists of children between the ages of 3 and 13. We take a limited number of campers in each age group to ensure the quality of our program. Campers are separated by what grade they are entering in the fall. Kindergarten and First Grade groups are coed. Second through eighth grade groups are separated into boys and girls. Keep in mind that swim lessons, free swim and lunch are always coed as well as many special events and unit programs. Our elective program for fourth through eighth graders is also coed.

Three and four year old campers can look forward to an exciting summer at Winding Trails Summer Day Camp in our “Scout” group. Your preschooler can participate in this half day camp program 2, 3 or 5 days a week. They will have arts & crafts, sports, water play, and an exposure to nature, music, and more. Our staff, experienced in early childhood and camping, will provide a high quality program for your child.

A very low counselor/camper ratio will assure that your child receives individual attention.

The morning Scout session is from 9:00am to 12:00 noon and the afternoon session is from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Children must be toilet trained. Swim Lessons are not a part of the Scout program.

We also give parents of children entering Kindergarten the option to register for a half-day or full-day camp program. Half-day campers will be able to attend camp from 9:00am to 1:30pm. They will get a morning full of activities, an early lunch, and a swim lesson before being picked up by a parent. This option is popular with those children still adjusting to a full day. The full day campers then go on to a supervised free swim and an afternoon of more activities.

SWIM LESSONS AND THE WATERFRONT

Winding Trails Summer Day Camp emphasizes the importance for all campers to learn to swim. The American Red Cross standards are followed and our waterfront staff consists of certified Water Safety Instructors and Lifeguards that provide lessons to all campers. All swim lessons and free swims are held at 100-acre spring fed Dunning Lake. Each session, campers will be tested for proper lesson placement on the first Monday. Level exit testing will be done on Thursday and Friday of the second week in a session. Campers also enjoy a daily free swim each afternoon. The buddy system is in effect during this period and buddy checks are conducted every ten minutes. Our camper to counselor ratio at the waterfront is 5 to 1.

SAILING PROGRAM

Beautiful 100-acre Dunning Lake is the picture perfect setting for a nice leisurely sail in one of our Sunfish sailboats. This program is limited to campers in grades 6 to 8 who have passed level 5 in swimming. Hour and a half lessons are provided each afternoon. There is an additional fee of $60.00 per session for this program. Space is limited.

CIT PROGRAM

A limited number of Counselor-In-Training positions are available for older youths entering grades nine and ten. This two-year program gives the C.I.T.’s a chance to share the work of camp counselors. Each trainee will attend discussions on the responsibilities of being a counselor, and work directly with a senior staff member. Candidates are encouraged to volunteer their services while developing the necessary leadership skills to possibly become a part of the senior staff. Applications are available at the Winding Trails Main Office. A short essay and interview will be required. Application deadline is Friday, February 29th.

Interviews will be held in early March. Enrollment in the C.I.T. program does not guarantee future employment.

DAILY PROGRAM

Schedules have been developed for each unit providing a balance between physical activities and passive programs. This two-week schedule provides for a lot of variety and unique programming.

Campers in grades K through 3 will have their entire day scheduled. Campers entering grades four through eight have two elective choices each afternoon. Every Monday they choose two forty-five minute elective periods that they will have every day for that week.
